The fair Asturian port city of Gijón; tucked far into the north of Spain, built overlooking the deep waters of Biscay, and my home for a little over a month in the autumn of 2021. My time there solidified my opinion that region felt like a throwback to a much older and forgotten time in medieval Europe, where mountainous walls allowed small independent nations to rise. But to what extent this independence and detachment Asturias still possessed from the greater nation of Spain I still intended to find out.
